Compañía Vinícola Del Norte de España Imperial Rioja Reserva 2009, Spain

My Rating 88 Points.

Price $40.

Beautiful color of dark ruby with a wide reddish rim.
Strong nose of blackberries, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, earth, peppercorn, smoke, citronella candle, chocolates, mocha, dark coffee and spices.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Oaky on the palate with blackberries, black cherries, cranberries, earth, wood, licorice, vanilla, cinnamon, coffee, mocha, tobacco, pencil lead, vinaigrette, spices and peppercorn.

Long finish with firm tannins and tangy pomegranates.

This 8 year old Rioja Reserva, is getting to its drinking age now, but still very oaky, with lots of vanilla and wood notes. A bit unbalanced, but very enjoyable by itself or with food.

It shows nice complexity, but it is too young. Needs 3 years to come to its own. Better after 60 minutes of airtime, but good right out of the bottle.

What a Wonderful nose, full of vanilla. I kept on smelling it for a while.

Made with mainly Tempranillo grapes, and aged for 12 months in French and American Oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.
