Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2007, Spain

My Rating 87 Points.

Price $25.

Ruby in color with a short brick/orange rim.

Gorgeous nose of sweet plums, cherries, strawberry pie, alcohol, vinegrete, cedar, licorice, cloves, earth, leather, pencil lead, peppercorn, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, Indian spices, cinnamon and cola. Extremely complex nose. I smelled it for at least 20 minutes without drinking much.

Medium bodied with high acidity and great legs.

Dry on the palate with tart cherries, raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, wood, light vanilla, cinnamon, coffee, forest floor, vegetables, vinaigrette, tobacco leaf, beef jerky, spices, herbs, black tea and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and sour raspberries.

This is a very nice Rioja red. This 10 year old is nicely aged with great complexity. Not fully balanced right now, but a good food wine. Not as good just by itself.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly. Very earthy (once it opens up) with lots of black tea notes.

I had it 3 years ago and it was very austere. Getting better as time goes by. Will be better in a few years. The 2009 vintage is much more approachable now.

14% alcohol by volume.
