Jim Barry Wines The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2012 Clare Valley, South Australia

My Rating 83 Points.

Price $18.

Inky in color with a red rim.

Nice nose of white flowers, blackberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, vegetables, asparagus, spices, leather, smoke, barnyard, dust, earth, eucalyptus, black pepper and spices.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, cherries, plums, oak, earth, vanilla, licorice, cloves, leather, green pepper, chocolates, smoke, bitter herbs, peppercorn and Mediterranean spices.

Medium finish with firm, green tannins and black pepper.

This is a harsh Shiraz from Clare Valley in South Australia. Enjoyable with food, but not just by itself. It has nice complexity and balance.

Needs 90 minutes in a decanter to fully open up, but drinkable right out of the bottle.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

  1. Excellent notes. 2012 was an excellent vintage in Australia resulting in very concentrated wines and decanting them definitely helps them open up. I’ve drunk a few Jim Barry wines and this one is known for being very reliable.
